10 Points To Check Before Taking Your Pet On A Trip

#1  Make sure your pet's tag is firmly attached to the collar. Identification should include your name, address and phone number as well as the pet's name.

#2  Take your pet for a vet check-up at least three weeks before you intend to go away. Then, if your pet needs care, you will have time, comfortably, to get the work done.

#3  If you pet is taking a medication, be sure to pack it. You may also want to pack a herbal relaxant to keep your pet calm during your trip.

#4  Bring familiar things from home. Feed your pet the same food and use the same bed, dishes and toys as at home.

#5  Bring along a pet carrier, even if you don't ordinarily use one. On a long trip your pet may become restless. If a dog or cat jumps into the front seat, your ability to safely control your vehicle may be impaired.

#6  Six hours prior to leaving, take away your pet's food. This will decrease the likelihood of motion sickness. You can continue to give your pet water until one hour before departure. (If your pet has a medical condition, continue food and water as required.)

#7  Take along your cat's litter box.

#8  Stop frequently to let your pets stretch their legs but be sure they are securely leashed. A runaway dog or cat in the middle of nowhere is a fast way to spoil your vacation.

#9  If you plan to fly, check -- AND DOUBLE CHECK WITH A SECOND REPRESENTATIVE -- what arrangements will be made for your pet. Remember that planes are frequently overbooked. Don't simply assume that they will make last minute arrangements for your animal.

#10  Check pet policies at your lodgings when you make reservations. Many (most!) hotels and motels do not welcome pets (often due to problems they have had with inconsiderate pet owners.) Leaving your pet overnight in the car can be deadly. Have a practical pet care plan worked out in advance.
