change in old cat....thyroid ?

Our 17 year old spayed female cat is going thru some kind of a change. Normally a house cat, she has decided she wants to be outside or in the garage all the time. She seems to have energy, doesn't seem sick, but has lost about 2-3 or her normal 8 pounds. She still eats about normally. Does this sound like possible thyroid problem? diabetes?
I'm sure my husband won't want to spend lots of $$$$ since she's already so old, but she's been such a good little pet and I don't want her to suffer.
Thanks for any info/experience.
