Bowel probs

My sweet little cat has always had probs defacating. She is a bobtail and was an accident when she was tiny. She came to me and it was months before I knew that she had broken her lower back. My vet says thats why she has so many probs with her bowels. Can I give her Flaxseed oil?? She won't eat anything thats been put into or sprinkled over her food. SO I wondered if she'd take the capsule (altho it is a huge pill to swallow).
Please help me...I've been staring at the bottle and have been tempted but I need to know before I give her anything.
