cat seems sick

Usually my cat is very playful but right now he lies around a lot, doesn't play with his cat friend and hasn't gone to the bathroom in 2 1/2 days. I want to take him to the vet but it will cost a lot of money esp if there is nothing wrong.
Has this happened to anyone else so that I can make a better decision whether to take him to the vet or wait a day or two. -thanks
