We recently rescued a hamster from one of my teenage daughter's friends! She has received it as a gift from a (former) boyfriend, and wasn't interested in it anymore, so she told my daughter that she had quit feeding it! Then I found out that she had put the cage outside without water on one of our hottest summer days. So I told my daughter that we would go over there and pick it up and be "foster parents" to this hamster rather than let this girl kill it! I could not believe it! We've had it for about 5 days now. I think it's less than 6 months old.
My daughter has a hamster of her own, so I have developed a soft spot for these creatures. But we really don't want to keep more than one. We're going to try to find a new home for it, after we make sure it's healthy and used to people. I have a couple of questions:
1. Should I take the hamster to a vet, to have it checked out? It seems to be eating fine now, and is fairly active. I got him a wheel and a sleeping house. The other girl didn't have either of them in his cage.
2. The little guy is not very tame, probably because he was either mistreated or ignored. Whenever I've tried to put my hand near him, he bites! So I'm careful not to do that now. I offer him treats from my fingers, but don't try to get near his face with my bare hands. As a result, I haven't even tried to pick him up. My daughter's hamster is quite tame, so I've never run into this. Do you think he will become tamer as he gets used to me? Any suggestions? Thank you!
