Look to see if the hair is matted or unkempt, indicating poor grooming. Also check for physical injury, possibly from a fall or sprain from wheel running (check feet and leg bones). Also, feel the body for lumps, possible abcess, the mouth for dental problem (teeth normal?) If your hamster is producing normal fecal matter and does not have a wet tail from diarrhea, chances are good that digestion is normal. If the tail is wet seek a vet experienced with hamster care--wet tail is a life-threatening illness. If your hamster is walking hunched up, there is some kind of digestion problem, but this may settle down. Hamsters become inactive when they are sick, so look for the signs mentioned here.
