I found your wonderful website and was hoping that with your expertise, I might get some answers to a couple of questions I have concerning my Portuguese water dog. We live in NJ and finding a good homeopathic vet is proving to be a challenge. I took her to a vet yesterday to try to get some answers to her itchy skin problems, which she has suffered with since she was a pup. By way of background, the dog is almost 6 years old and was raised on vaccines, Heartguard, Frontline, and commercial dry dog food her whole life until May 1, 2007. The vets have had her on steroids, desensitization shots for allergy (she tested positive for weeds, sycamores, rye grass, dust mites, molds, fleas, and black ants). Anyway, in addition to her itchy skin, she developed a stinky ear infection about a week ago which prompted me to get her into a doctor's office. I've been trying to be patient with the raw diet, understanding that this takes time, and a few months is certainly not long enough to undo a lifetime of potential damage. The vet gave me Zymox Otic drops which has hyrocortisone 1% in it, for her ears, and some gentian violet. She also gave me a bottle of Chinese Herbs by Plum Flower called Huang Lian Jie Du Wan. These are teapills to be given 5 pills, 3 times a day. I've searched this herb everywhere but I can't find any reassurance about its usage and safety. She also did muscle testing on her and said that she reacted to Vit A, Calcium, and Pollen. She have me two Homaccord solutions (one for the Vit A/Calcium and one for the pollen) to administer this way: Hold bottle against your dog, tap down spine at least 6 times, continue holding bottle against dog for 5 minutes, then give a few drops to the dog orally. I'm totally open to alternative forms of medicine for both my pets and human family, but I guess I'm just not as enlightened as I need to be to understand this procedure.
I'm very concerned about using the teapills, homaccords, and the drops for her ears (she also recommended a good fish oil supplement and Chlorhexiderm shampoo which I'm fine with), but I can't find a recommended vet around here, nor am I able to afford one right now, esp. after what I just had to pay for this visit.
Can you concur or advise me in any way? I understand that as a professional, you are not able to give any specific recommendations for my pet, but any guidance you can offer will be so gratefully appreciated! I don't want to harm her in any way; she's been suffering too long already.
