Please try and find a holistic animal practitioner to work with your dog - you wont regret it. Also see my reply to the allergy posting immediately before yours. But briefly, in my opinion, you need to clear the steroids etc from your dog's system; of course he has a weak immune system; that's what steroids do; their anti inflammatory mechanism is via suppression of the immune response! Also suggest you check out long term side effects of prolonged steroid use. I'd suggest the Nux vomica homeopathic for this purpose. There are numerous homoepathics that assist with skin problems, depending on the type of condition = eg graphites for weeping lesions, rhus tox for red, inflammed patches, etc. There are excellent herbs that will help skin also; Dandelion an excellent skin/ liver herb, clivers and burdock as great blood cleansers, taken internally. Chickweed and Calendula can be made up into an ointment or wash, and applied externally. As well as Vitamin C as a natural anti-histamine, and the B group vitamins to help with skin condition, and nervous system. I would say the diet needs more: essential fatty acids in the form of oils such as flaxseed, and some pulped green/orange vegies too. But these need to be introduced gradually. Also, the digestive system needs to be looked at (again, see my previous reply_). It's not as complicated as it sounds; if you cant find a practitioner, check out some of the excellent books around: eg Dr Richard Pitcairn.
I have a 7 year old coonhound who has had bad skin allergies since she was young. The vet keeps on putting her on steroids and antibiotics to treat her itchy skin and sores she develops from licking, but its a reoccurring problem. The most recent diagnosis is that she has a weak immune system and is unable to fight allergins, so she gets itchy and licks until her legs look horrible. Is there any suggests for a more permanent fix? Anything more natural? We feed her duck and potato food with no additives, but she needs something else.
