In Reply to: Takhi posted by Andrew K on September 20, 2004 at 08:12:44: Przewalski was Polish, not Russian. His mission (on which he never located the takhi, so it is said), was commissioned by the Russian Czar.

Second, Japanese biologists have confirmed through dna matching that the Takhi is NOT the ancestor of the domestic horse.

: The Mongolian wild horse is called the "takhi" in Mongolia but they have been extinct in Mongolia since the 1960's.
:
: In the West, this horse is called Przewalski, named for Russian naturalist Nikolai Prezewalski who "identified" this horse back in 1979.
:
: At the beginning of the 20th century, 53 of these (wild) horses were brought to Europe. Today the descendents of these 53, numbering about 1500, exist in Canada, China, Germany, the Netherlands and the Ukraine.
:
: There is a plan by an international group to reintroduce them to Mongolia. Whether they survive there (after years of different environment) is yet to be determined.

: : Where do you find Mongolian Horses in the US? And I was wondering, are there different breeds of Mongolian Horses?
: :
: : What is the difference between the domestic mongolian horse and the (?) "wild" mongolian horse. I have heard they (the wild ones) are called "Przewalski" after a European biologist.

: : Thanks.
