Contractions that continue for hours yet produce no results . i.e., the foal has progressed no further down the birth canal.
If this happens, immediate veterinary assistance is needed because continued labour without progress eventually wears the mare down so that she no longer has any strength left. This can, in turn, endanger both the life of the mare and the unborn foal.
