Lying down whilst ridden

I have just taken on a 12 year old gelding who I used to ride at a riding school. They gave him up because with novices he tried to lie down. I hacked him over to the new yard and he was very good on the road but when I took him in the school he laid down on me. I realise that I will have to be tougher with him but as I don't know him that well I lack a little confidence in how tough to be with him. I am lucky to have an experienced rider to help me some days but if anyone can give me tips on what to do I would be grateful. He is nice natured and not nasty.
