Bassett - Car Riding

We have recently adopted a bassett from rescue. She was not abused, but a surrender as her owners moved and could not take her. She is 11 months old. I want to be able to take her on long car trips but she gets very nervous and excreeds an odor as well as deficates in the car when we take her. No matter how long I walk her or leave her outside before we go, she will poop in the car. She seems very nervous and gets a strong "doggy smell". Can someone tell me how to make her relax and like riding in a car?
